  Unlike the reactions of tropone with tetraethylallenetetracarboxylic ester and phenylsulphonylpropa-1,2-diene reported in the literature (which yield 2+8 cycloadducts), thermal additions involving tropone and ethyl penta-2,3-dienoate, ethyl hexa-2,3-dienoate and ethyl 4-methylhexa-2,3-dienoate occur predominantly in a 2+4 manner. The reactions are of mechanistic significance.

  Thermal addition of tropone to allenic esters (RR1C = C = CHCO2Et, Ia, R = R1 = H; Ib, R = H, R, = CH3; Ic, R-H, R1-CH3CH2; Id, R=CH3, R1=CHCH2) furnishes 4+2 cycloadducts as major products, unlike the reported additions of tropone involving a few other allenic systems. The additions display pi-facial selectivity resulting in preference for E geometry at the exocyclic double bond in the obtained adducts.
