  Synthetic resins which are water-dispersible resins, containing boron and chemically-bound quaternary ammonium base salts, can be dissolved or dispersed in water to provide aqueous coating compositions. The resins are derived from epoxy group containing organic materials and are essentially epoxy group free.   Resins containing epoxy groups and quaternary ammonium groups can be prepared by reacting an epoxy group-containing material and an amine acid salt. Boron is added to the composition either by adding a member selected from the group consisting of aqueous boric acid solution, boric acid, and compounds hydrolyzable to form boric acid in aqueous medium to the reaction product or by utilizing a material selected from the group consisting of amine salts of boric acid and amino-containing esters of boric acid as the amine salt constituent. It has now been found that when the reaction between the amine acid salt and the epoxy is conducted in the presence of a controlled amount of water, more uniform and desirable products can be obtained.

  It has been found that quaternary onium (e.g., ammonium, sulfonium, and phosphonium) salt group-containing epoxy resins are particularly useful as grinding media in preparing stable pigment disperions useful in water-dispersible coating systems, for example, electrodepositable compositions. The resins are prepared by reacting a material selected from the group consisting of amine salts, phosphine-acid mixtures, and sulfide-acid mixtures with a 1,2-epoxy group containing material wherein a ratio of at least about 0.4 eqivalents of quaternary onium groups are produced per equivalent of epoxy group initially present. Preferably, the system contains at least a small amount of polyoxyalkylene glycol.
