Novel bifunctional thiolcarboxylic acid esters such as thiodimethacrylates have been prepared in good yield by reaction of dimercaptanes with acid chloride in KOHaq and organic solvent system in the presence of phase transfer catalyst under mild reaction conditions. These bifunctional thiomethacrylates are useful as crosslinking agents having high refractive indices.
A photochromic composition and a coating composition comprising a molecular compound of a chromene compound and an aromatic compound. The photochromic composition provides a photochromic optical material as a cured product and the coating composition is applied to a lens substrate and cured to provide a photochromic optical material. The above molecular compound is also provided.

A method for preparing a colloidal solution of non-aggregated zirconia particles, comprising the following steps:
a) providing a zirconium hydroxide sol,
b) adding to said sol an inorganic acid according to an [inorganic acid]/[Zr] molar ratio of <0.5,
c) performing the hydrothermal treatment of said sol, and
d) recovering the colloidal solution of zirconia particles.

Polymeric compositions have photochromic and blue-light filtering ability and are useful in the manufacture of ophthalmic medical devices. The polymeric compositions comprise a photochromic material incorporated into polymeric host materials and are activatable by blue light having a first wavelength range to become photochromic, and are thereby capable of absorbing blue light in a second wavelength range. A process for producing a resin ahving a high refractive index which comprises radically polymerizing a material monomer, characterized in that said material monomer comprises [I] at least one polymerizable monomer selected from the group consisting of a polyfunctional thioacrylate and a polyfunctional thiomethacrylate (as an indispensable component), and optionally [II] at least one other polymerizable monomer which is radically polymerizable with said polymerizable monomer [I], a resin having a high refractive index produced by said process and optical materials, especially lenses and disk substrates prepared from said resin.
