Synthesis and crystal structure of bis(2-dimethylaminoethylindenyl) divalent organolanthanides (Ln=Sm, Yb)

First examples of racemic bis(2-dimethylaminoethylindenyl) divalent unsolvated organolanthanide complexes (Me2NCH2CH2C9H6)(2)Sm (1) and (Me2NCH2CH2C9H6)(2)Yb (2) have been synthesized by the reaction of (Me2NCH2CH2C9H6)K with LnI(2) (Ln = Sm, Yb). The two compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis and H-1-NMR spectrometry. The X-ray crystal structure of 2 has been determined by diffraction study. The crystals are prismatic, space group P2(1)/a (not equal 14), with a = 17.342(6) Angstrom, b = 8.542(7) Angstrom, c = 17.353(2) Angstrom, beta = 118.70 degrees, V = 2254(1) Angstrom(3), Z = 4, D = 1.607 g cm(-3). A polysilane is produced by subjecting a trihydrosilane to hydrogenative condensation in the presence of a titanium or zirconim complex catalyst having a first group selected from a dialkylaminoalkylcyclopentadienyl group, an &agr;-[(dialkylamino)alkyl]indenyl group and a &bgr;-[(dialkylamino)alkyl]indenyl group and a second group selected from a cyclopentadienyl group and a pentamethylcyclopentadienyl group. The above dialkylaminoalkyl group may be replaced by a branched alkyl group. The zirconium complexes are novel compounds.
