methylenemalononitrile, generated in situ from reaction of formaldehyde and malononitrile, to yield naphthopyrans and naphthodipyrans. 5-Hydroxynaphtho[2,1-b]pyrans reacted further with methylenemalononitrile to yield naphthodipyrans.
