    Metalated nitriles and enolates rapidly and efficiently abstract chlorine from 2-chloro-2-fluoro-2-phenylacetonitrile to afford a diverse range of chloronitriles and chloroesters. The method provides the first general anionic chlorination of alkylnitriles, tolerates numerous functional groups, and addresses the challenge of synthesizing alpha-chloronitriles under mild conditions.

    Processes for producing a compound represented by the formula (1), which includes an acrylic acid derivative and is useful as an agricultural chemical or medicine. One of the processes comprises the step of formulating a compound (3) and converting the OH of the resultant compound (2) into OR″. The first step comprises reacting a formic or orthoformic ester in the presence of a Lewis acid and a base. The second step comprises reacting the compound with R″OH or with R″OH and CH(OR″) 3 under acidic conditions or using a phase-transfer catalyst in a two-phase system and regulating the base and the concentration thereof to stereoselectively synthesize the target compound. In another, process, the compound is efficiently produced without isolating the compound. The compound can also be produced without the compound (2). 1

    Processes for producing a compound (1) represented by formula (1), which includes an acrylic acid derivative and is useful as an agricultural chemical or medicine. One of the processes comprises the step of formylating a compound (3) (step (1)) and the step of converting the OH of the resultant compound (2) into OR" (step (2)). The step (1) comprises reacting a formic or orthoformic ester in the presence of a Lewis acid and a base.     The present invention provides: a novel production technique that enables production of a polymer whose molecular weight and molecular weight distribution are controlled and production of a polymer having a complicated structure in a desirably controlled manner using commercially available materials without using a radical polymerization initiator or a special material for use in living radical polymerization and without the need for strict polymerization conditions; and a radical polymerization initiating group-containing compound for use in the technique. The present invention relates to: a method for producing a polymer, the method including a polymerization step of mixing and warming (1) a radically polymerizable monomer, (2) an organic compound wherein at least one group that functions as a group for initiating polymerization of the monomer and that has a structure represented by formula 1 or formula 2 (X in the formula represents Cl or Br) is introduced in a molecule of the organic compound, and (3) an iodine-containing compound, thereby initiating, from the group having the structure, radical polymerization accompanied by a termination reaction; and the organic compound of (2) for use in the method.

    Famoxadone (3-anilino-5-methyl-5-(4-phenoxyphenyl)-1,3-oxazolidine-2,4-dione), is a new agricultural fungicide recently commercialized by DuPont under the trade name Famoxate(R) Famoxadone is a member of a new class of oxazolidinone fungicides that demonstrate excellent control of plant pathogens in the Ascomycete, Basidiomycete, and Oomycete classes that infect grapes, cereals, tomatoes, potatoes and other crops. DuPont's entry into the oxazolidinone area resulted from the procurement of 5-methyl-5-phenyl-3-phenylamino-2-thioxo-4-oxazolidinone (1) from Professor Detlef Geffken, then at the University of Bonn, An extensive analog program was initiated immediately after the fungicidal activity of 1 was discovered through routine greenhouse testing. The discovery program in the oxazolidinone area eventually culminated in the advancement of famoxadone to commercial development in the early 1990s. The synthesis of various oxazolidinone ring systems and the development of the structure-activity relationships that led to the discovery of famoxadone are described.
