    The invention provides phosphorescent organometallic complexes. The complexes of the invention may be prepared as films further comprising a charge carrying host material may be used at an emissive layer in organic light emitting devices. In one embodiment, the complex is a hyper-branched organoiridium complex comprising a 2-phenylpuridine ligand wherein the phenyl ring or the pyridine ring contains 4 non-hydrogen substituents.     Disclosed is an organic EL device comprising an electroluminescent layer having a single layer or a multilayered structure of two or more layers, the electroluminescent layer containing a pyridine derivative represented by the formula (1): wherein Ar1 represents an aryl group, m represents an integer of 1 to 5, Φ represents a group represented by the formula (1a) : (wherein Ar2 represents an aryl group, and p represents an integer of 1 to 5), or the formula (1b): (wherein Ar3 represents an aryl group, and q represents an integer of 1 to 5), and n represents an integer of 0 to 2. The organic EL device is excellent in luminescent efficiency, luminance and durability, and emits blue light with improved luminescent efficiency and luminance, which are the same as those of other colors, and is also is excellent in durability.

The organic electroluminescent device comprises at least an anode and a cathode arranged on a supporting substrate and at least two organic layers, namely a first layer and a second layer, between the anode and the cathode, in which the organic electroluminescent device is characterized in that the first organic layer contains a light emitting dopant and the second organic layer contains a charge-transporting material and a part of the material constituting the first organic layer, and the second organic layer is formed by coating after formation of the first organic layer.
