The microwave spectrum of an unstable molecule: Chloroketene ClHCCO

The microwave spectra of four isotopic species of the unstable molecule chloroketene ClHCCO have been observed from the flow pyrolysis of monochloroacetyl chloride and from the pyrolytic reaction of dichloroacetyl chloride with zinc metal. The spectra, which consist only of b-type transitions, were observed in the frequency range 26.5–80 GHz. Accurate rotational constants and quartic and sextic centrifugal distortion constants have been obtained for all isotopes. Large numbers of perturbations have been observed in the chlorine quadrupole hyperfine structure; consequently, the complete quadrupole coupling tensor has been evaluated. The dipole moment has been measured. The molecule has been shown to be planar, and a partial r0 structure has been determined.

A simple ‘three-component-reaction’ between halo- or alkylthio-ketenes, Schiff bases and sulfurdioxide, yielding 4-oxo-1,3-thiazolidine-1,1-dioxides 4 in one step, is presented.

Simple heating of mixtures of N-arylcycloheptatriene-1-imines and acyl chlorides in the presence of an excess amount of triethylamine afforded 1-azaazulen-2(1H)-ones in high yields. The intermediacy of the [8+2] cycloadducts between the 2,4,6-cycloheptatriene-1-imines and ketenes were confirmed by their isolations. Analogous results were obtained with tropone hydrazones.
Methoxycarbonylketene 4a, methoxycarbonyl(methyl)ketene 4b, chloroketene 4c, cyanoketene 4d, diphenylketene 4e, and 2-pyridylketene 4f have been generated by flash vacuum thermolysis of the corresponding 2-pyridylacetamide derivatives 3a–f and isolated in Ar matrices for FT-IR spectroscopic characterisation. quartz-filtered radiation (lambda>240 nm) led to the appearance of infrared bands attributable to carbonyl, carbon monoxide, and ketene species; no bands belonging to a precursor complex NO2cdots, three dots, centeredXCHCHX (where X=Br or Cl) were observed upon matrix deposition. The possible reaction pathway is discussed.

HeIPhotoelectronspectra are reported for the mono- and di-chloro- and -bromo-ketenes (XHCCO and X2CCO, X Cl, Br) generated in high yield as unstablemolecules from thermolysis of acid halides. The spectra are discussed and assigned by reference to the parent ketene molecule, orbital trends, and comparison with theoretical calculations.
