    Etastomeric impact modifier polymer is blended with polymer of at least one of the monomers: esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, vinyl aromatic monomers such as styrene and substituted styrenes, olefins and unsaturated esters of organic acid; which is effective to substantially reduce gel colonies of impact modifier in formulations with rigid thermoplastic matrix polymers. The impact modification efficiency of the elastomeric modifier is thereby improved. The weight ratio of impact modifier polymer to gel colony reducing polymer is from 99.5:0.5 to 96:4. The blends may be made by mixing emulsions of the polymers and co-spray drying or co-coagulating. Impact modified thermoplastic polymer compositions contain the blend in a weight ratio of 60:40 to 98:2 ofthermoplasticto blend.

    @ The dispersability of processing aids for vinyl chloride polymers is improved by the use of a dispersing aid comprising at least one homopolymer and/or copolymer containing at least 50% by weight of units of one or more of the following monomers: (C1-C8)-alkyl acrylates, (C1-C9)-cycloalkyl acrylates, ethylene, propylene, vinyl acetate and butadiene. Preferred processing aid compositions therefor comprise blends of (a) copolymer(s) of methyl methacrylate and, in an amount of less than 50% by weight of the copolymer, (Cl-C4)-alkyl acrylate(s) and (b) at least one such dispersing aid homopolymer or copolymer wherein the ratio of (a):(b) is 99.5:0.5 to 90:10. The blend may be prepared by intimately mixing components (a) and (b) as latex polymer and subsequently coiso- lated.

    A process for the treatment of archival material, more especially entire books and other bound volumes, to improve the paper structure and provide some protection against degradation, which comprises the radiation-induced polymerisation, within the paper, of a vinyl monomer or a monomer mixture comprising one or more vinyl monomers, irradiation being carried out in the presence of the monomer or monomers, and the process being carried out in a substantially non-aqueous system. In one preferred embodiment of the process ethyl acrylate is polymerised in the presence of methyl methacrylate as yield enhancer; in another preferred embodiment ethyl acrylate is used on its own, the treatment being repeated. The polymerisation system may also contain a basic monomer like an amine-substituted alkyl methacrylate.
