This disclosure describes compositions of matter useful as anti-inflammatory agents and as inhibitors of the progressive joint deterioration characteristic of arthritic disease, and the methods of meliorating inflammation and of inhibiting joint deterioration in mammals therewith, the active ingredients of said composition of matter being certain cis-2-benzoyl-3-hydroxy-2-alkenonitriles and/or the pharmacologically acceptable cationic salts thereof.

We describe the development of a general palladium-catalyzed carbonylative method to synthesize acyl fluorides from aryl, heteroaryl, alkyl, and functionalized organic halides. We report the synthesis of sulfone iminium fluorides (SIFs), a reactive class of sulfur(VI) molecules. The synthesis is tolerant of a variety of substituents on the sulfur and nitrogen components. The SIF reagents were applied to the deoxyfluorination of alcohols and carboxylic acids, providing highyields of fluorinated products in 60 s at room temperature.
