A continuous process and system for producing a polymer comprising maleic anhydride and alpha-olefin monomeric units is disclosed. The process comprises combining monomeric reactants comprising the maleic anhydride and the alpha-olefin, in the presence of a minimal effective amount of a solvent, to produce a polymerizable reaction mixture. The solvent is present in minimal amounts, namely, at about 2 to about 9 weight percent, based upon the weight of the reaction mixture. The polymerizable reaction mixture is heated; and at least one thermally-decomposable initiator is added to the thus-heated, polymerizable reaction mixture to initiate the polymerization reaction. The presence of the initiator causes the maleic anhydride and the alpha-olefin to polymerize, thereby producing the desired polymer. An effective additional amount of the monomeric reactants as well as an additional effective amount of solvent, are controllably and substantially continuously added to the reaction mixture, for maintaining the desired polymerization reaction. The produced polymer is therafter continuously removed from the reaction mixture.

A process for preparing an oligomeric copolymer of an unsaturated acidic reactant and a high molecular weight olefin having a sufficient number of carbon atoms such that the resulting copolymer is soluble in lubricating oil and wherein at least 20 weight percent of the total olefin comprises an alkylvinylidene isomer, which process comprises reacting the high molecular weight olefin with the unsaturated acidic reactant in the presence of a free radical initiator and a solvent selected from:
(a) polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride (PIBSA),
(b) polyPIBSA, or
(c) a mixture comprising polyisobutene and a copolymer prepared by reacting a high molecular weight olefin, wherein at least 20 weight percent of the total olefin comprises an alkylvinylidene isomer, and an unsaturated acidic reactant in the presence of a free radical initiator.
Oil soluble dispersants suitable for incorporation into lubricating oils and having improved compatibility with fluoroelastomers are made by reacting a polyamine with a terpolymeric acylating agent derived from a high molecular weight polyolefin containing at least 30% of terminal vinylidene radicals, an α-olefin of up to 28 carbon atoms, and an unsaturated acidic reactant, followed by post-treatment with at least one post-treating agent.
Oil soluble dispersants suitable for incorporation into lubricating oils and having improved compatibility with fluoroelastomers are made by reacting a polyamine with a terpolymeric acylating agent derived from a high molecular weight polyolefin containing at least 30% of terminal vinylidene radicals, an α-olefin of up to 28 carbon atoms, and an unsaturated acidic reactant, the polyamine being reacted initially with less than all of the terpolymeric acylating agent and then with at least one further charges of the said acylating agent.

A novel copolymer of an unsaturated acidic reactant and an atactic vinyl terminated propene polymer (VTPP) and its use in preparation of fuel and lubricant additives is taught. The VTPP has a major amount of polymer chains containing terminal vinyl unsaturation, a number average molecular weight of at least 500, and comprises at least 70 weight per cent propene and 0 to 30 weight per cent of at least one olefin selected from the group consisting of C2 and C4 to C10 olefins. The unsaturated acidic reactant comprises at least one unsaturated C4 to C10 carboxylic or dicarboxylic acid or anhydride. An oil soluble dispersant additive of the invention useful in oleaginous compositions is prepared by contacting the atactic VTPP copolymer with at least one nucleophilic reagent selected from the group consisting of amines, alcohols, metal reactants and mixtures thereof under conditions effective to form adducts of the nucleophilic reagent with the copolymer. The novel dispersants made from the copolymers and terpolymers of the invention can be polymeric succinic ester-amide dispersants, polymeric succinimide dispersants, polymeric succinic amide-triazole dispersants, or polymeric succinic triazole dispersants. Fuel and lubricant compositions containing such additives are a part of the invention.
