A general biocatalytic resolution procedure for the preparation of a variety of - and -hydroxyalkanoic esters of high optical purity has been developed. The noteworthy feature of this methodology resides in the selection of a non-hydrolyzable ester at the carboxyl terminus to improve the enantiospecificity in the lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis of the acyloxy ester.
