Optically active heterocyclic allylsulphides 1–7 react with organomagnesium compounds in the presence of CuBr to afford optically active alkenes in good yields and very high γ-selectivity. (+)-2-Isopropyl-2-methylglutaric acid has been prepared from (+)-2-isopropyl-2-methylsuccinic acid. The absolute configuration of these acids has been defined as S by an X-ray crystallographic examination of (+)-rubidium 1-methyl 2-isopropyl-2-methylsuccinate.
