The diastereoselective Co2(CO)8 complexation and LiAlH4 reduction of diastereotopic carbon–carbon triple bond, induced by chiral ortho substituted arene tricarbonylchromium complexes is described. The relative configuration of the obtained diastereoisomers are determined unequivocally by X-ray crystallography, 1H-NMR and transition state analysis.
