There are also colorimetric and/or fluorescent detectors which have a solid organic matrix comprising one or more PDAs deposited on the PMMA substrate, wherein the PDA includes polymerized units of one or more diacetylene monomers, and wherein the matrix further comprises at least one recognition element of an analyte. There are also methods for detecting analytes using this detector, uses thereof and a methods for its preparation.

    Molecular chemical and/or biological sensors that exhibit a very high density of sensing functionality and which are applicable to a wide variety of different analytes, and enable rapid, convenient and economical detection of analytes are prepared by reacting a dendritic polymer with a diacetylene reagent wherein the diacetylene functional groups are subsequently intramolecularly polymerized to form segments having alternating conjugated double and triple bonds. Sensory groups that can bind with an analyte are bonded to the acetylene monomer units to form molecular sensors that produce observable and measurable color changes when an analyte binds with the sensory groups.

    Devices and methods of use and manufacture for the identification and characterization of analytes, e.g. proteins, are provided. The subject devices are characterized by having a substrate with a polymerized monomolecular film over at least a portion of the substrate, the monomolecular film having at least one ligand or specific binding pair member associated therewith. Preferably the monomolecular film is stable to the laser intensities employed in MALDI-MS. In certain embodiments, the ligands are biotin, integrin antagonists, antibodies and antigens. In using the subject devices, a subject device is contacted with a sample. If present in the sample, a member of the binding pair of interest binds to its complementary ligand and, once bound, can be analyze by mass spectroscopy techniques. Also provided are kits, which include the subject devices.
