The 17-electron cationic [Fpâacyl] intermediates generated by cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN) oxidation of Fpâacyl complexes in dry acetonitrile undergo a fast homolytic dissociation leading to alkyl radical species whose subsequent fate is dependent on the structural features and reaction conditions.
