The penta-aquamethylchromium(III) ion is formed in high yield from the chromium(II)–hydrogen peroxide–dimethyl sulphoxide system in aqueous solution. The methyl-deuteriated analogue has been prepared by the corresponding reaction with [2H6]dimethylsulphoxide.
