Abstract An improved synthetic procedure to (PPh4)[NbSCl4] (1) is described involving the reaction of NbC15 with two equivalents of NaSBut. Complex 1 reacts with NaSPh to yield (PPh4)[NbS(SPh)4] (2), the crystal structure of which confirms a square-pyramidal geometry at the metal with a multiply-bonded sulphur at the apex (NbS = 2.171(2) A).
