  The mechanism of the unexpected formation of 3-methyl derivatives of imidazo[2,1-b]thiazoles in the system 2-mercaptoimidazole-1,3-dichloroacetone-solid K(2)CO(3)-solid KI-18-crown-6-toluene has been studied. The structure of 3-methyl[1,3]thiazolo[3,2-a]benzimidazole has been confirmed using X-ray structural analysis.
