A number of Cp*PtMe2X and Cp*PtMe2(L)(+)(OTf)(-) complexes have been prepared [Cp* = eta(5)-C5Me5; OTf = OSO2CF3; X = OTf, I, N-3, S(p-tol); L = CO, C2H4, CH2=CHMe, NH3, NH2But]. The complexes Cp*PtMe2(CO)(+)(OTf)(-), Cp*PtMe2(C2H4)(+)(OTf)(-), and Cp*PtMe2(CH2=CHMe)(+)(OTf)(-) represent a rare type of compound in which a pi acid ligand is coordinated to a high valent metal center predominantly through sigma-donation and pi-backbonding plays only a limited role in the metal-ligand interaction. The arylthiolate complex, Cp*PtMe2[S(p-tol)], has been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
