    Alcoholysis of N1-Arenesulfonyl-N1, N2-diarylacetamidines (1-30) was studied kinetically. The rate of the reaction between the substrates and ethoxide ion depended on the electron-withdrawing resonance effect of the substituents on both the N1-aryl and N2-aryl groups to a similar extent. The rate of the neutral alcoholysis depended on the resonance effect of the N1-aryl substituent to a larger extent than in the former reaction, and depended hardly at all on the electron-releasing resonance effect of the N2-aryl substituent, showing that the reaction does not proceed by the solvolysis mechanism.A reaction mechanism is proposed in which the rate-determining attack of the nucleophile is accompanied by the concerted departure of the N-arylarenesulfonamide group.

    The present invention relates to the use of bisarylsulfonamide compounds of formula (I) wherein W is a CI-5 branched or unbranched alkyl group or a C2-5 alkenyl group; nis0or1; R1 is H, a C, 1-8 branched or unbranched alkyl group, a C2-8 alkenyl group, or an aryl or aralkyl group; Ar1 is a substituted thienyl, furyl, pyrrolyl, imidazothiazolyl, thiazolyl, pyridyl or phenyl group; and Ar2 is a substituted phenyl, indolyl or benzoimidazolyl group; in the preparation of a medicament for treating proliferative disorders. Further aspects of the invention relate to compounds of formula (I), pharmaceutical compositions thereof, and an assay for determining binding to HDM2.

    A set of N-arylbenzenesulfonamides with various substituents at the arylamine and benzenesulfonyl positions were prepared, and their antifungal properties were measured in vitro against such plant pathogenic fungi as Pythium ultimum, Phytophthora capsici, Rhizoctonia solani, and Botrytis cinerea. Compounds 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 14, 16, 18, 20, 21, 24 and 27 had antifungal activity over a broad spectrum of the phytopathogenic fungi tested, where 50% of inhibition (ED50) was in the range of 3-15 μg/ml. Based on the in vitro activity, six derivatives (3, 4, 10, 18, 21 and 27) were selected and tested further for their fungicidal efficacy in vivo. The fungicidal efficacy of 10, 21 and 27 had a disease control value of over 85% at 50 μg/ml against wheat leaf rust, while that of 4 was selective against cabbage club root disease.
