The expression of mechanicalchirality by a hydrogenbondtemplatedrotaxane, as detected by 1H NMR spectroscopy, may be modulated by affecting the co-conformational behaviour of the rotaxane through varying solvent or by addition of acid and base.

Hydrogenbond templated [2]catenanes and [2]rotaxanes have been synthesized using azide precursors derived from a single isophthalic acid derivative precursor. Anion recognition promotes the shuttling of the macrocyclic ring in mechanicallychiral [2]rotaxanes. The position of the macrocycle is reported by changes in the diastereotopic behaviour in the 1H NMR spectrum. The macrocycle can be returned to its initial station upon removal of the anion.
