    Azatriphenylene derivatives and their use in the electron-transporting layer of an electroluminescent device that comprises an anode, a spaced-apart cathode, and at least one electron-transporting layer disposed between the spaced-apart anode and cathode. Such EL devices provide lower drive voltage, improved power efficiency, and longer operational lifetime.

    An organic light-emitting device includes a light-emitting layer including a host, a dopant, and a hole-trapping material, wherein the hole-trapping material is provided at 0.01 to less than 5% by volume relative to the light-emitting layer volume, has an oxidation potential that is selected so that it is less than the oxidation potential of the host in order to serve as a hole trap, has an oxidation potential that is selected so as to avoid formation of a certain charge transfer complex between the hole-trapping material and the host if the charge transfer complex causes a reduction in the electroluminescent efficiency of the dopant, and has an oxidation potential that is selected so as to avoid formation of the charge transfer complex between the hole-trapping material and the dopant.

    An organic light-emitting device comprising an anode; a cathode; a hole-transporting layer disposed between the anode and the cathode; a phosphorescent light-emitting layer disposed between the hole-transporting layer and the cathode, wherein the phosphorescent light-emitting layer includes at least one host and at least one phosphorescent dopant; a first exciton-blocking layer disposed between the hole-transporting layer and the phosphorescent light-emitting layer; wherein the first exciton-blocking layer has a triplet energy greater than the triplet energy of the host in the phosphorescent light-emitting layer; and a second exciton-blocking layer disposed between the first exciton-blocking layer and the phosphorescent light-emitting layer, wherein the second exciton-blocking layer is in contact with the phosphorescent light-emitting layer, and wherein the second exciton-blocking layer has a triplet energy less than the triplet energy of the first exciton-blocking layer.

The material in the first hole-blocking layer has a triplet energy greater than the host of the phosphorescent layer and the material in the second hole-blocking layer has a triplet energy higher than the dopant in the phosphorescent layer.     Disclosed herein is an organic electroluminescent device including: an anode; a cathode; and an organic layer including a light-emitting layer, a naphthacene compound layer containing a naphthacene compound, and an electron transport layer; the light-emitting layer being composed of a light-emitting guest material and an aromatic hydrocarbon compound having the skeleton of anthracene, and the naphthacene compound layer containing no less than 80 wt % of naphthacene compound represented by the formula (1) below and having a thickness of 0.5 to 10 nm and being in contact with that side of the electron transport layer which faces the light-emitting layer.
