In an embodiment, a process for making a polycarbonate composition by a melt polymerization process can comprise: melt polymerizing reactants to produce a molten reaction product; filtering the molten reaction product prior to any extruding; and extruding the molten reaction product to form the polycarbonate composition. In another embodiment, a melt polymerization process can comprise: melt polymerizing a dihydroxy reactant and a carbonate compound in the presence of a catalyst to produce a molten reaction product; and upstream of all extruders, removing gels having a particle size of greater than or equal to 0.5 micrometers from the molten reaction product; and extruding to produce the polycarbonate composition. A melt polymerization unit can comprise: a polymerization vessel for melt polymerizing a dihydroxy reactant and a carbonate compound to produce a molten reaction product, a melt filter, and an extruder. The melt filter is located upstream from the extruder.
