    In an embodiment, a process for making a polycarbonate composition by a melt polymerization process can comprise: melt polymerizing reactants to produce a molten reaction product; filtering the molten reaction product prior to any extruding; and extruding the molten reaction product to form the polycarbonate composition. In another embodiment, a melt polymerization process can comprise: melt polymerizing a dihydroxy reactant and a carbonate compound in the presence of a catalyst to produce a molten reaction product; and upstream of all extruders, removing gels having a particle size of greater than or equal to 0.5 micrometers from the molten reaction product; and extruding to produce the polycarbonate composition. A melt polymerization unit can comprise: a polymerization vessel for melt polymerizing a dihydroxy reactant and a carbonate compound to produce a molten reaction product, a melt filter, and an extruder. The melt filter is located upstream from the extruder.

    Provided is a highly flame-retarded polyphenylene ether resin composition that, even when ignited, efficiently forms bulky porous char serving as a combustion barrier layer and, as a result, can reduce heat release and smoke production during combustion, and that is also easily colorable. The polyphenylene ether resin composition contains a polyphenylene ether (A), an organosulfonic acid and/or organosulfonic acid alkali metal salt (C), and an aromatic phosphate flame retardant (D). The polyphenylene ether resin composition contains 50 mass% or more of the polyphenylene ether (A) per 100 mass% of the polyphenylene ether resin composition and has a maximum heat release rate (HRR (max)) of 250 kW/m2 or less as measured in accordance with ISO 5660-1 using a cone calorimeter.
