    The present invention provides compounds, compositions and methods for promoting the healing of or reducing injury caused by chemical or radiation damage, minimizing deleterious effects on normal cells in cancer therapy, and treating and preventing cancer and micrometastasis. Radiation damage is caused by many radiation sources. In some embodiments, the radiation damage is caused by radiation therapy, such as cancer radiation therapy. In some embodiments, the radiation damage is caused by a nuclear accident, including a nuclear power plant accident. In some other embodiments, radiation damage is caused by, for example but not limited to, nuclear terrorism, nuclear weapons, and natural radiation, such as that from outer space or the earth.
