Cyclopropylmercuric chloride, lithium chloropalladite and methyl acrylate react at 0–25°C to give an 81% yield of methyl sorbate. A π-allylic palladium intermediate is proposed since vinylcyclopropane, carbomethoxymercuric acetate, and lithium chloropalladate give the same product. The deuterium kineticisotope effect at the exo-methylene carbon of allenyl-cyclopropane in its thermal 1,3-sigmatropic shift to 3-methylenecyclopentene was found to be 1.15/D2 at 311.5°C. This is a striking example of a rotational effect.
