    This invention is directed to certain tetrahydrocarbyl phosphonium phenoxide salts. These compounds have the structural formula: Each R independently is a hydrocarbyl or inertly substituted hydrocarbyl, X is a phenoxide anion and m is the valence of the anion X. The phenoxide anion X is a conjugate base of a polyhydric phenol bearing from 2 to 6 nuclear hydroxyl groups and having from 6 to 30 carbon atoms. These phosphonium phenoxide salts optionally may be complexed with a polyhydric phenol or with a tetrahydrocarbyl phosphonium hydroxide salt. The compounds of this invention are suitable as catalysts for reacting vicinal epoxy groups with phenols, carboxylic acids and carboxylic anhydrides. These compounds are also suitable for preparing precatalyzed epoxy resins and precatalyzed polyhydric phenols. When these compounds are employed as catalysts in the advancement reaction of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A with bisphenol A, epoxy resins having weight average molecular weights over 100,000 units have been demonstrated.

    Extremely rapid ambient curing of polyepoxide resins and mixtures of polyepoxide resins and polyacrylate esters is achieved by use of a curing system composed of at least one polymercaptan and at least one catalytic co-curing agent which is the condensation product of: (a) aliphatic amine or substituted aliphatic amine containing at least one primary aliphatic amine group where the aliphatic moiety is ethylene or greater with (b) at least one amino acid, its corresponding lactam or other amide forming derivative. Optionally, known Lewis Base catalysts for the epoxy/ mercaptan reaction, such as tertiary amines, may also be used.

    This invention is directed to a process for preparing an advanced epoxy resin by reacting (a) a compound bearing an average of more than one vicinal epoxide group per molecule with (b) a polyhydric phenol or thiophenol, in the presence of a catalytic amount of a tetrahydrocarbyl phosphonium salt. The invention is characterized in that the reaction is conducted under conditions such that the reaction and exotherm temperature does not exceed 175 °C and the reaction medium is essentially anhydrous. These conditions are shown to prevent significant deactivation of the catalyst. Advanced epoxy resins produced by this process are generally less colored and have epoxy equivalent weights closer to the theoretical values than prior art resins produced in the conventional manner using phosphonium salts as catalysts. The process of this invention also includes the optional step of adding a sufficient amount of a phosphonium ylid quenching agent to selectively deactivate the catalyst without substantial reaion with the advanced epoxy resins.

    The present invention relates to imido functional polyethers having recurring units of the formula having a molecular weight of from about 5000 to about 50000 , in which m is an integer of from 1 to 3, X is -O-, -SO- or -SO₂-, R is a radical of the formula in which Y is -CH₂-, -CH(R₂)-, C(R₂)₂-, or -CH₂-CH₂-, and R₂ is lower alkyl, R₁ independently of another is lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkoxy, cyano, phenyl, or phenoxy, and n is an integer of from 0 to 2. These polyethers can be used as tougheners for epoxy, bismaleimide and polyimide resin systems.
