  In a bearing element, for a sliding journal bearing such as a crankshaft main bearing, a bearing shell 4 supports a sliding layer, or overlay, 12. The overlay is of a polyamide-imide polymer, in which the amine content of the polymer includes at least one fluorinated diamine and at least one non-fluorinated diamine. A method for making the bearing material includes the steps of copolymerising an anhydride monomer, a fluorinated diamine and a non-fluorinated diamine to form the polyamide/imide plastics polymer material of the bearing sliding surface. The sliding surface may also comprise filler materials within a matrix of the polyamide/imide plastics polymer material.
