  In an attempt to explore a possible approach to 3-aryl-5-hydroxyanthra[1,2-b]furan-6,11-diones 4 via the nitro-derivatives 3, we have unexpectedly obtained, starting from leucoquinizarin 1 and various (2-chloro-2-nitroethenyl)benzenes 2, the hitherto unknown title anthracene-9,10-diones 5, 6 or 7 depending on the conditions employed.
