A structural change between the complexes of praseodymium and neodymium nitrates with (Z)-2,3-diphenyl-1,4,7,10, 13-pentaoxacyclo-pentadec-2-ene(stilbeno-15-crown-5): synthesis and structures of [Pr(NO3)3 (stilbeno-15-crown-5)] and [Nd(NO3)3 (EO5)] (EO5 tetraethyleneglycol)

A structural change in Ln(NO3)(3) . nH(2)O complexes with stilbeno-15-crown-5 occurs between Ln = Pr and Ln = Nd. The unstable Nd(NO3)(3) . L (L = stilbeno-15-crown-5) can react with formic acid to form stable Nd(NO3)(3) . EO(5). Under the same conditions the stable Pr(NO3)(3) . L cannot be transformed into Pr(NO3)(3) . EO(5). X-ray crystallographic examinations of these two complexes have been carried out. There are two independent Pr(NO3)(3) . L monomers in one asymmetric unit; in each the coordination number is 11. The tetraethyleneglycol ligand wraps around the neodymium(III) ion in Nd(NO3)(3) . EO(5) and all the three nitrate groups are bidentate. The coordination number is also 11.
