Monobromide was used as the starting material. The [2+2]photocycloaddition of diolefins directly gave all the calix[4]arene regioisomers having chiral and achiral structures in 20–47% yields. They formed a complex with alkali metal ions and extracted large metal picrates rather than small ones.
