The synthesis of neutral ruthenium(II) dihalo complexes of the type RuX2(Me2SO)3L and RuX2(L′)4, using the easily prepared RuBr2(Me2SO)4 complex is described. The synthesis of Ru(II) complexes of the type where L is a phoshine or arsine yields materials that are very active catalysts for the molecular oxygen oxidation of thioethers to sulfoxides. Reactivity and catalytic activity of [RuBr2(Me2SO)3]

[RuBr2(Me2SO)3] has been used as precursor for the synthesis of many ruthenium(II) complexes containing bromide ion and other ligands. The complexes, thus synthesised are: [RuBr2L4] (L = PPh3, L2 = phen or bpy); [RuBr2(Me2SO)2L2] (L = py, AsPh3; L2 = phen, bpy or o-phenylenediamine); [RuBr2(CS)(PPh3)3]; [RuBr2(CS)(Me2SO)2]; [RuBr2(CS)(AsPh3)2(Me2SO)] and [RuBr(C2O4H)(Me2SO)2]. These compounds have been characterised with the help of analytical data and various physical methods. [RuBr2(Me2SO)3] has been used as a catalyst for the oxidation of PPh3 by molecular oxygen.
