    Copolymers of ethylene and an a-olefin of formula CH2 = CHR (in which R represents a straight or branched chain C1-C5 alkyl group) or copolymers of ethylene, said a-olefin and a iinear or cyclic diene or higher polyene having non-conjugated double bonds are prepared by polymerization in an inert organic solvent and in the presence of (a) an organoaluminium compound of formula R'nAlX(3-n) (in which R' represents a C1-C20 hydrocarbon group, X represents a halogen atom or an alkoxy group and n is a number such that 1 ≦ n≦ 3), (b) a trivalent to pentavalent vanadium compound soluble in an inert organic solvent, and (c) as a catalyst activator. an ester of a halogenated organic acid. The polymerization is effected in two reactors connected in series whilst keeping the reactors at different temperature levels. The copolymers produced have excellent processability.

    Solutions of VCl₄ in inert organic solvent are stabilized by incorporation of decomposition retardants being halogenated organic compounds having at least two halogen atoms attached to the same carbon atom and activated by adjacent electron donor groups or carbon-carbon double bonds. One of the especially preferred stabilizers is butyl perchlorocrotonate. The solutions are useful in polymerization processes.

    A lubricating oil composition exhibiting improved flow properties, specifically low temperature flow properties, and viscometric properties, particularly low temperature viscometric properties comprising lubricating oil and (i) an amount effective to improve the low temperature flow properties of said lubricating oil composition of additive consisting essentially of at least one low molecular weight non-ethylene containing polymer or interpolymer containing pendent ester groups comprising repeating methylene units derived from mixture of aliphatic alcohols, said mixture containing at least about 25 weight percent C14 alcohol; and (ii) an amount effective to improve the viscosity index of said lubricating oil composition of additive comprising copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer, said copolymer comprising intramolecularly heterogeneous copolymer chains containing at least one crystallizable segment of methylene units and at least one low crystallinity ethylene-alphaolefin copolymer segment, wherein said at least one crystallizable segment comprises at least about 10 weight percent of said copolymer chain and contains an average ethylene content of at least about 57 weight percent, wherein said low crystallinity segment contains an average of not greater than about 53 weight percent ethylene, and wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight distribution characterized by at least one of a ratio of M w/ M of less than 2 and a ratio of M 2/ M w of less than 1.8, and wherein at least two portions of an individual intramolecularly heterogeneous chain, each portion comprising at least 5 weight percent of said chain, differ in composition from one another by at least 7 weight percent ethylene.

    Oil soluble grafted ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer useful as a viscosity modifier for oleaginous compositions comprising: (i) backbone copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer, said copolymer comprising intramolecularly heterogeneous copolymer chains containing at least one crystallizable segment of methylene units and at least one low crystallinity ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer segment, wherein said at least one crystallizable segment comprises at least about 10 weight percent of said copolymer chain and contains at least about 57 weight percent ethylene, wherein said low crystallinity segment contains not greater than about 53 weight percent ethylene, and wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight distribution characterized by at least one of a ratio of Mw/Mn of less than 2 and a ratio of Mz/M2 of less than 1.8, and wherein at least two portions of an individual intramolecularly heterogeneous chain, each portion comprising at least 5 weight percent of said chain, differ in composition from one another by at least 7 weight percent ethylene; having grafted on said backbone copolymer (ii) residue of ethylenically unsaturated grafting material; said grafted ethylenealpha-olefin copolymer having substantially the molecular weight distribution, i.e., within about 10 percent, of said copolymer of ethylene. The preferred grafting material is an ethylenically monounsaturated carboxylic acid material having 1 to 2 carboxylic acid groups or an anhydride group.
