When anchored to nanoITO (indium tin oxide), the ruthenium chromophore–catalyst assembly shown acts as an electrocatalyst for wateroxidation, with O2 evolution occurring at an overpotential of 230 mV in 0.1 M HClO4. The potential response of the electrode points to 3 e−/2 H+ oxidized [RuaIIIRubIVO]5+ as the active form of the assembly.
