The chlorohydrido complexes of ruthenium (Ph3P)3Ru(H)Cl and iridium (Pr3iP)2Ir(H)Cl2 react smoothyl with H2 (1 atm, 20°C) in a 50% NaOH/benzene two-phase system in the presence of triethylbenzylammonium chloride as a phase transfer catalyst to form polyhydride complexes (Ph3P)3Ru(H2)(H)2 (1) and (Pr3iP)2IrH5 (2), respectively, in quantitative yields.
