The sequence avoids oxidative conditions and instead employs reliable transformations including the Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons and addition of Grignard reagents to N-methyl-N-methoxy (Weinreb) amide intermediates. The reaction sequence is suitable for the synthesis of nonsymmetric aliphatic and aryl substituted derivatives.
