Enantioselective synthesis of 1-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-3-pentanol from 3-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-propanal by catalytic ethylation

The catalytic enantioselective ethylation of 3-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-propanal by diethylzinc in the presence of various beta-aminoalcohol precatalysts is presented. The enantiocontrolled alkylation step was accomplished with enantiomeric ratios of up to 86:14 and chemical yields ranging from 38 to 81% for the resulting 1-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-3-pentanol. Two new types of oxindole alkaloids, salacin and 3-oxo-7-hydroxy-3, 7-secorhyn-chophylline, have been isolated from the Thai medicinal plant Uncaria salaccensis.
