  New chiral lanthanide(III) complexes have been prepared by the reaction of lanthanide(III) halides with optically pure (R,R)-1,2-ethanediylbis(t-butylphenylphosphine oxide). The cerium(III) chloride complex is structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Tetravalent cerium chloride and nitrate complexes with the same ligand are also prepared and characterized.
