  An alternative synthetic approach to diaryl ethers has been developed. In the key transformation, Robinson annulation of nonracemic aldehydes 16a,b, derived from L-glutamic acid 5-methyl ester and phenoxymethylvinyl ketone, provided alpha-phenoxyenones 17a,b.
