  4-二甲基氨基吡啶（DMAP）与2-溴苯乙酮之间的反应可轻松制得1- [2-（4-取代苯基）-2-氧代乙基] -4-（二甲基氨基）吡啶鎓溴化物（1-14）。NaOH水溶液对1–8的作用生成相应的吡啶鎓叶立德（15–22），将其分离为有色稳定的结晶固体。将15-22加到二甲基乙炔二羧酸酯（DMAD）中，可以以46-62％的收率得到3-（取代的苯甲酰基）-7-（二甲氨基）吲哚嗪-1,2-二羧酸二甲酯（23-30）。
