  A process for preparing a 2-cyanobiphenyl compound represented by the formula (II): wherein R1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or hydrogen atom, from a phenylmagnesium chloride compound represented by the formula (I): wherein R1 is as defined above. According to the process, a 2-cyanobiphenyl compound represented by the formula (II) can be economically, simply, industrially and advantageously prepared.
