The nitration of arenes, phenols, and aniline derivatives is accomplished by electrochemical oxidation of nitrite as a safe nitro source to NO2/N2O4 using inexpensive graphite electrodes. Stoichiometric amounts of 1,1,1-3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropan-2-ol (HFIP) in acetonitrile significantly increase the yield by solvent control.
