The reaction was carried out using metals able to perform a single-electron oxidation process under stoichiometric [Fe(III), MN(OAc)3] or catalytic [Fe(III)] conditions. The stereoselective synthesis of α-methyl substituted penicillin by FeIIIâCuII and MnIIIâCuII promoted cyclizations and its relationship with the Baldwin's INPS (isopenicillin N synthase) mechanistic hypothesis on the biosynthesis of penicillin is described.
