    Photolyses of dibenzothiophene sulfoxides (DBTOs) with intramolecular trapping functionalities attached in the 4-position show higher quantum yields of deoxygenation. Deoxygenation quantum yields are also less solvent dependent for the substituted DBTOs. Product analysis shows a detectable amount of intramolecular O-trapped products and suggests that solvent effects observed in previous studies of DBTO derive at least mainly from the reactivity between the oxidizing species that is released, presumably O(P-3), and the solvent, rather than from other macroscopic solvent parameters.

    The invention provides compositions and methods of using the compositions in fluorinating aryl precursors containing a leaving group replaceable by a fluorine atom. The compositions include a metal ion source, a electrophilic fluorine source, a base, and a compound, which is an aryl precursor of the aryl fluoride, and which has a leaving group replaceable by the fluorine atom. Exemplary methods of the invention make use of such compositions and methods to prepare an aryl fluoride compound. In an exemplary embodiment, the electrophilic fluorine source is a source of 18F.

    A catalyst-free method for the synthesis of dibenzothiophenes has been developed. The nucleophilic intramolecular cyclization of methylthiolated diazonium salts enables the direct synthesis of dibenzothiophenes under mild reaction conditions. The addition of TEMPO is beneficial for improving the reaction yield by suppressing the formation of by-products, which can be formed via a radical-mediated process
