  Herbicidal phosphonates and preparation and use thereof, having the general formula wherein Q is hydrogen or chlorine, X is oxygen or sulfur and R R, and R2 are various organic groups. The compounds can be made, e.g. by an number of processes involving introduction or abstraction of chlorine at the 2-position or by reaction of a phosphite with an appropriate haloacetate. The compounds can be formulated for agricultural use in conventional manner and exhibit selective as well as general herbicidal effects, showing both pre- and post-emergence activity.
