Electrochemical reduction of oxygen in the presence of an alpha-dimethylsilyl ester results in removal of the dimethylsilyl group. The reaction presumably proceeds by a mechanism involving electrochemically-generated superoxide ion. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The conformational properties of alpha-dimethylsilyl esters, synthesized in excellent yields by reaction of ester enolates with chlorodimethylsilane (DMSCl), have been explored by both molecular mechanics calculations and a variety of H-1- and Si-29-NMR spectroscopic experiments.
