  Substituted 1-arylpyrrole compounds of formula (II) below, are useful as pesticides, in particular for the control of insects, arachnids, and nematodes. Processes to make the compounds and intermediates used for their preparation are described. Additionally, compositions containing the compounds and methods of use therefore are provided. The compounds are of a formula (II) wherein typical substituents are:    X is halogen or a group R⁵S(O)n, in which n is 0, 1 or 2 and R⁵ is CF₃, CCl₃, CF₂Cl, CFCl₂, CF₂Br, CHF₂, CHCl₂ or CHClF;    R¹ is H, Br, SCH₃, CH₃ optionally substituted or alkoxyalkylideneimino;    R² is CN;    R³ is H, Cl or CH₃ optionally substituted;    Y is CF₃ or Cl;    X¹ and X⁴ are each Cl; and    X² and X³ are each H.
