Oxidation of castanospermine (1) (HlO4) and its 6-O-acetyl derivative 7 [Pb(OAc)4], followed by reduction and acetylation, were reported. A mechanism is proposed for the novel Pb(OAc)4 oxidation of a beta-tertiary amino alcohol.
