  A small thia[3]metacyclo[2]thiophenophan-1-ene, cyclo-phane composed of a thiophene ring, a benzene ring, and their bridge, has been synthesized and displays photochromism, while a metacyclothiophenophan-1-ene bearing a long bridge was non-photochromic due to little conjugation between three double bonds, that was estimated by DFT calculations.
