Treatment of a series of 4-benzylsulfanyl-1,3-diols with TsCl in pyridine gives substituted 3-hydroxy-thiolanes in high yield by 1,4-SBn participation and debenzylation with chloride ion. The reaction is stereospecific at three stereogenic centres, and relatively insensitive to structure.
